Mandate
The CERN Technology (TE) Department is responsible for designing, developing, operating and maintaining superconducting and normal-conducting magnets, magnet and circuit protection systems, cryogenic installations, and ultra-high vacuum systems. It maintains world-class expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge in the associated specialized technological fields such as low and high temperature superconducting technology, machine protection and electrical quality assurance, cryogenic and vacuum technology, and coating and surface treatment techniques.
The TE Department performs the research and development in these areas required for the consolidation and upgrade of the existing CERN accelerator complex and for future CERN projects, in full collaboration with European partners and international collaborators. The TE Department is fully committed to the safety, environmental sustainability, and long-term viability of its activities, and to training and developing the next generation of physicists, engineers and technicians in its domains of expertise.
As the TE Department, our mission over the next five years is to deliver the technological backbone that will enable CERN’s strategic accelerator vision — from ensuring the successful implementation of the HL-LHC Project to preparing the technology for future accelerators.
We are committed to:
- Operational excellence in sustaining and upgrading CERN’s magnetic, cryogenic, machine protection and vacuum systems
- Driving innovation in superconducting, cryogenic, coating and surface treatment technologies
- Enabling our strategic projects, including completion of the HL-LHC, North Area consolidation and FCC studies.
- Fostering collaboration across CERN departments, external institutes, and with industrial partners to streamline cooperation, share knowledge and accelerate international progress.
- Building sustainability and resilience into all aspects of our work — technical, environmental, and human.
- Cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace, supporting and developing our people, recognising that our strength lies in the collective expertise, dedication, and creativity of our teams.
